Do names Sondre Norheim and Morgedal ring a bell? The first is known as the father of modern skiing, from the second, the Telemark district of Morgedal, Norway, which is known as the cradle of skiing.
Skiing can be broadly divided into two categories: Nordic and Alpine.
Nordic skiing, the older of the two, originated in Scandinavia and uses free-heel bindings that attach at both the toe and the heel of the skier's boot. Types of Nordic skiing include cross-country, ski jumping and Telemark.
Alpine skiing has its origins in the European Alps and is characterized by fixed-heel bindings.
We have all watched Alpine skiing competitions such as Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super-G and Downhill. But did you know that the word
slalåm comes from a Norwegian dialect (
sla referring to a slope

The first recreational ski club was formed in 1861 at Kiandra in Australia which also held the first documented international downhill carnival.

The first snowboard was made in 1965. Sherman Poppen from Michigan made it for his daughter by binding two skis together.
• Lovers of ski holidays in Switzerland have a writer to thank. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, had fallen in love with skiing in Norway and thought Switzerland offered the perfect terrain. He took some skis and encouraged two Swiss brothers to join him.
